New Addition
It's official! The Buchanon family will be adding a new member
next year! Yes! My wife and I are expecting! Well, I'm expecting
she'll actually be the one having the baby - and she's expecting
me to get a night job.
More to come.

Multi-panel Cartoons
Up until now, I have always done single-panel cartoons. I like
single-panels because they lend themselves well to visual gags. The
difficult thing is the art and the gag line must "click" perfectly or the
timing is lost. It's not easy to do with just one panel.
For the fall issue of the Florida Journal of Environmental Health, I
decided to try doing a couple of two-panel cartoons. It worked out well.
Actually, I found that the two-panel cartoon works real well for
combining dialogue with visual humor - plus your attention span doesn't
run out before you get to the punch line.

Birthday Present
Two months ago, I changed jobs to cut down on my daily commute. (Remember $4.05 per gallon gas?) So far,
it has really been a good move for me. I'm saving lots of money by driving 40 miles a day less. Plus, I'm not
driving on the interstate - which is like filming a scene from DEATH RACE!
I let it be known in my new office that I'm a cartoonist. Not long after, I was asked to do a caricature cartoon for
for a co-worker in our office who was turning fifty. I agreed to do it, although it would have to be my best
"interpretation" since I don't really do caricature. A secretary bought a small picture frame with the word
"SMILE" in wooden letters on top. She asked me to use the gag line "...while you still have teeth"
which I did.
It turned out really nice. The guy loved it and I was pleased - that he didn't beat me over the head with it.

Think it's time for an update?!
Well this is what happens when your side life gets man-handled by your real
life. You look up from your grinding wheel one day and almost a year has
gone by. Where do I begin?
I'll start with my personal highlights - and lowlights. Beginning with the
lowlights, my 89 year old grandmother died last January. She was an
extraordinary woman. She was a wise life mentor and spiritual leader to me.
For many years in my childhood, she was sometimes a "co-mother". Grandma
kept me grounded in the appreciation of the simple things in life. She taught
me to fish - and clean fish. She taught me how to be friendly - even though I
was shy.
I'll miss her.
I had a submuscular transpostion of the right arm in August. Ok, in english, I
had surgery to relieve a pinched nerve in my right arm. It had been bothering
me for awhile. It was PAINFUL, but I'm 100% better now.
Now for the highlights...
In March, the California Journal of Environmental Health reprinted a
cartoon of mine from the Florida Journal of Environmental Health. This
makes two publications that feature my cartoons. Who will be the third?
In May, my wife and I welcomed the birth of our third daughter, Camryn Kate
Buchanon. I remember my father calling me "the child of his old age" - he was
29 when I was born. Try 39, Dad! Lucky for Camryn, she looks like her mother.
Lastly, I FINALLY joined the 21st century and got myself a Facebook page!
My wife did also, and now we're in competition to get the most friends - pitiful.
Anyone want to send me a friend request?...Please?!
